BOB ANTHONY finds there’s no argument that the main drawcard for tourists visiting the Japanese city of Hiroshima is its place in history as the site of the first atomic bomb attack.

When the plane descends over the Martial Mountains and lands safely, the passengers clap and cheer. The Music is still playing
It was more than 25 years ago when features editor, John Newton, last visited Mozart’s city. And he was relieved to find during a recent visit to Salzburg that very little had changed – even the Sound of Music is still going strong. There are cities that never sleep but, more importantly, Salzburg is one that never loses its rich historical and picture postcard lure.

It Was a ‘Silent Night’
Christmas has a special significance in the tiny village of Oberndorf, near Salzburg, on the Austrian-Germany border, writes John Newton.
It was here 201 years ago this Christmas Eve that the famous Christmas carol – Silent Night – was performed for the first time.
The carol was originally a poem by Joseph Mohr, the illegitimate son of an impoverished knitter and a soldier who deserted the army of Salzburg’s archbishop.
Mohr, who was then Oberndorf’s assistant priest, wrote the text and gave it to his friend – Franz Zaver Gruber, asking him to put the words to music for two solo voices and a choir, with guitar accompaniment.

Fish and Chips with Chip Hop Ale
When it comes to bragging rights, it’s typical for a Yorkshireman to claim the county surpasses any other in England. They can’t help themselves, particularly when their quaffing favourites, fish and chips, washed down with a ‘reet’ good pint – are the hot topic.
And, as features editor, John Newton, discovered, the reet (also meaning right or proper) amber beer isn’t the only one named after the local dialect/twang.

Würzburg has that winning combination for Len Rutledge
Three Irish missionary monks visited Würzburg in A.D. 686 to Christianize the local ‘barbarians’. The inhospitable locals beheaded them. Mountains are to be climbed but I have never been drawn to ropes, picks, anchors and spikes. I’m more for sitting back and letting a train or cable car do the hard work for me. That is one reason I love going to Jungfraujoch, The Top of Europe.

Into the Sahara
So far, this expedition into the previously unvisited Morocco has been so interesting and exciting, but it is about to take on a new dimension! My first visit to the legendary Sahara Desert and staying in a Bedouin Camp! A luxury camp set-up just for us.
Our extremely comfortable coach arrives at Merzouga, a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town and our band of travellers are very excited.

Morocco - Part Two
Morocco's capital is Rabat, which is on the Bou Regreg River and adjoins the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for architecture that salutes its Islamic and French-colonial heritage.
The tour takes us to the majestic Hassan Tower. . The city's iconic 12th-century minaret, which towers above the ruins of a mosque. Unmissable, it’s been the symbol of Rabat for eight centuries. It remained unfinished after the death of its founder in 1199, but its solitary splendour overlooking the river amid a wasteland of broken columns is eerily poignant.

Ireland... It’s just like the movies
By Peter Chapman
IT MIGHT seem a little strange, but my decision to do a self-drive tour of Ireland was inspired from watching movies centred on the shamrock isle.
They always revealed beautiful scenery, picturesque boutique hotels and friendly Irish pubs.
As I watched I envisaged myself joining in on a song or two while downing a pint of Guinness at McMurphy’s corner pub.

Morocco – With Back-Roads Touring
The adventure begins
As a very frequent traveller, I always have several special places, yet visited. High on my list was Morocco, so I researched as to a suitable touring company to look for with a great itinerary and a reputation that would be suitable for us mature travellers. The answer was Back-Roads Touring, a well-established company that has won many awards over the last 25 years for its services. Another positive for me was they only take small groups of up to 18 passengers.

Milwaukee: Easy does it
Roderick Eime look’s at USA’s smaller cities for a more relaxing experience.
If I were to ask you what you know about Milwaukee, Wisconsin, chances are you might recall the hit 1970s sitcom, ‘Laverne & Shirley’. Either that or you’re a bike nerd and know Milwaukee as the birthplace of the iconic US motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson.

The splendour and variety of India’s Golden Triangle
Len Rutledge: “I am sitting in front of the Taj Mahal absorbing the magic of the world’s most beautiful building. India’s crowds, chaos and poverty are temporarily relegated to the back of my mind as I let this piece of paradise into my soul”.
India is a country of enormous contrasts where poverty sits beside wealth, beauty intermingles with filth, and structure and chaos compete for supremacy. It will dazzle all your senses and cause you heart-ache at the same time.

Morocco Bound
Having been a travel writer/photographer since 1984, I have been privileged to visit many countries. Often I am asked which is my favourite destination. My standard reply is, ‘the one I have never been to’.
When we were approached by Back Roads Touring, to pick any destination from their multitude of destinations, it was I thought, going to be an interesting challenge!

Michael Osborne discovers Old Malaya and delightful surprises
As we travel the world, looking for the ideal situations that make a perfect holiday, we are not often surprised. But our recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, as a guest of AirAsiaX and Visit Malaysia, we received an invitation to have a look at a new specialist dining set-up, Old Malaya.
A few minutes in a taxi from the Intercontinental and I arrived at this wonderful restored colonial building complex.
