Sigatoka River Safari ***
Another discovery in Fiji Islands magazine was a feature on Fiji’s very own river safari described as ‘Simply Unforgettable’.
The prospect of zooming up a river in a state-of-the-art, custom built jet boat; to visit a traditional Fijian village looked to interesting to pass.
The courtesy bus picked us up from our hotel and the driver made the trip down to the Coral Coast a pleasant experience. Driving through the town of Sigatoka, we head further up the river to the safari base, don our lifejackets and get ready for the adventure.
The beautiful rumble of the V8 engines echo’s through the river valley and within seconds we are almost flying. The boats skim across the shallows at an exciting pace and the engines alert the villagers, who all wave and offer the famous Fijian smile as we scoot past.
The scenery is spectacular and the rich farming land, which is known as the salad bowl of Fiji, keeps changing as we follow the many twists and turns of the river.
Each Safari stops at a designated village and the proceeds from the visit going to help the village. After a guided walk we were given a traditional welcome of a kava ceremony followed by singing and dancing. Even the small children join in and the genuine laughter and enjoyment they generate is very infectious.
The Fijian village lunch, prepared by the ladies, was well accepted and stools were offered for those of us who couldn’t squat on the floor.
The villagers are on-hand to answer the many enquiries about life in the rural areas. Another thing they enjoy is having their photo taken, in particular the children. Smiles a metre wide and fingers held up to form a vee are the order of the day.
Like most things we enjoy, the visit comes to an end too soon and we make our way back to the boat for the trip home.
They warn you that there might be a chance of getting a bit wet and we were about to find out. The specially trained driver throws the boat into a 360- turn and the shrieks of delight from the passengers are followed by requests for more. What an exciting experience, something I hadn’t done for about 40-years.
Yes we did get a bit wet from the spray, but it didn’t matter, because we were hit with a tropical downpour. And there wasn’t one complaint.
