Are You a Nomad?

The study into Australians’ homes today and into the future has shown that mature Australians (66 and over) have moved on average 9 times in their lifetime are more likely than Generation Y or Generation X to have moved using a professional removalist company. When it comes to the actual move, 70% of mature Australians surveyed said they do not feel stressed but found it a simple and manageable process.

Mature Australians are settling for their perfect and suitable house more easily than other generations with the majority far more likely than Generation Y to say they have found their ideal home.

The study also shows that when it comes to the ideal home, women of all ages are still looking.

Did you know that women (70%) were more likely than men (56%) to say they had not found their ideal home yet because they do not have enough money to live in or build it

Australians are moving home more frequently than ever before, with the majority (51%) having lived in their current home less than 5 years.

This mobility is even more evident with the younger generations with Generation Years having moved an average of two times within the last five years, compared to Mature residents on average having moved just once in the last 12 years.

Australians are choosing to move within their own backyard, with the majority of recent moves occurring within the same state (85%) and four in five of these were within the same or an adjoining suburb.

Australians have such busy lives these days that the majority no longer find moving stressful. With over half (58%) of Australians saying that they did not feel stressed at all when it came to moving.

Interestingly, despite environmental credentials being dismissed as an important factor in the ideal home in 2011 (5% rated it as important) Australians expect it to top the list of what makes the ideal home in the next century (36%).

No longer is the idea of the sea-change/tree-change a romantic reality to Australians, with respondents showing there is an increase in Australians moving from rural and coastal areas to urban areas.

Grace Removals commissioned the research and worked with futurist, Mark McCrindle, to compile the best findings and drawing on his expert insights.

The research was conducted to celebrate Grace Removals’ 100th birthday.
