A Diamond DayBlue Water Sailing Some days are diamonds and following the invitation from Alistair at Blue Water Sailing, we had a diamond when we experienced the delights of sailing with him around the most spectacular waters of Port Stephens. All my life I had wanted to sail yachts, I had grown up around water, my grandfather was a fisherman from Watsons Bay and I went to college at Bondi, but being a red-head who could get sun-burnt on a cloudy day, I was never able to fulfil my wish. But here we were, at the marina at Peppers Anchorage at Corlette and about to board Alistair’s brand new yacht (and suitably protected from the sun). A quick introduction to our fellow passengers and we are ushered into the main cabin for a very thorough safety briefing. We are soon gliding across the sparkling waters and enjoying the commentary about the efficiency of this yacht and the delights of the surrounding waters. Now the very good news – Alistair tells us that we are to go into racing mode and see what this beauty can do. Who wants a turn at the helm? Why me of course and we are soon heeled over and running at around 8-knots. It is amazing how sensitive the controls are and a gentle correction on the helm keeps us heading the right direction. This is so exciting and I felt like turning around and heading away from the fast approaching marina. Alistair’s invite came from the fact that mature travellers are some of his on-board guests and now we know why. Blue Water Sailing have arranged a selection of mouth-watering adventures Luncheon Sail – a four-hour sail combined with a fresh local seafood gourmet lunch of freshly shucked oysters and lobster accompanied by a selection of local world-class Hunter wines. Full Day Sail – Up to 8-hours sailing around Tomaree head and then Broughton and Looking Glass Islands. Take a dip in the crystal waters and enjoy the same sea food lunch and wines. Sunset Sail – Port Stephens is famous for its lingering sunsets and this 2-hour cruise will ensure you can enjoy nature to its fullest. Also relishing in local oysters, sensational regional cheeses and a glass or two of sparkling Hunter wines. They can even arrange group bookings, where you can have a friendly race against the other boats. |
