Würzburg has that winning combination for Len Rutledge
Three Irish missionary monks visited Würzburg in A.D. 686 to Christianize the local ‘barbarians’. The inhospitable locals beheaded them. Fortunately, we find the citizens are much friendlier today, and we also discover there are many things to do, great places to see, and excellent wine and food to enjoy.
Würzburg, at the northern end of Germany’s Romantic Road, has much history, culture, rich cuisine, religious landmarks, and idyllic scenery.

Tripura – a hidden secret of India
Sandip Hor explores the North East

“Is this the famous Lake Palace of India”, asks Jenny from Australia while waiting for a boat to take us to the Neermahal Palace, an imposing edifice set in the middle of a tranquil lake in Tripura where we have arrived to attend the International Tourism Mart focused to enhance tourism to the North Eastern part of the country.
It’s not unusual for first time visitors to get confused with the much-hyped Lake Palace in Udaipur in Rajasthan, both built by former Maharajas to beat the summer heat.

A Day or Two in Hong Kong? John Newton finds the right hotel for you!
It's not cheap, but John Newton found a rooftop restaurant at one of Hong Kong's under-rated hotels is not only an amazing location, but the degustation menu is arguably the best you'll get in Asia's food capital. It's a masterpiece by a master chef.
The Skye roof-bar and dining is located high on the 27th floor of the 45 year-old Park Lane Hong Kong, a Pullman hotel, tucked away in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island.
When only the best will do ...

Spending a day in Hong Kong
John Newton has a very busy day on his way back from Europe!
It's a simple 'ding ding' - but when there are more than 160 of them it adds to the cacophony of noise along the tramways of Hong Kong Island.
Affectionately called ‘ding ding’ by locals, mimicking the sound of a bell, the city’s 114-year-old trams shake, rattle and roll their way past some of the island’s skyscraper landmarks.
Don't miss the tram ...

Zagreb may not have an Eiffel Tower, Colosseum or Trafalgar Square, but what the dynamic Croatian capital lacks in monumental icons, it does have a treasure or two of its own - even if they are somewhat quirky, writes features editor, John Newton.
Topping the bill is the Museum of Broken Relationships in the city’s Upper Town. Dedicated to failed love relationships, the museum’s exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers, along with brief descriptions.

Accor and the ‘city of love’
Accor Hotels wins hands down when it comes to the top location in the ‘city of love’ (la ville d’amour).
The big accommodation group's two Paris properties are almost at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and command sensational views from some rooms, particularly at night when the lights are turned on the most-visited paid monument in the world.
How close do you want to get ....

The Perfect Majorca Hideaway
There's a flurry of building work on new hotel and apartments in bustling Majorca - much of it centred in the capital Palma - but also in the island's hot spots. It's a case of knock down the old and up with the new to cope with the phenomenal tourist growth.
But it also has its beauty spots that are a magnet for mature travellers.

An abode of luxury in the desert city
Dubai the second largest of the seven Emirates, which make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), graciously showcase the best mingling of East and West in a cutting-edge environment, characterized by Arabic culture, Bedouin heritage, and Islamic faith.
That’s why annually over 14 million visitors step in there to enjoy its spectacular beaches, untouched desert landscapes, annual sporting events and a myriad of shopping and entertainment options.

BackRoads and Southern Croatia
It was an off-the-beaten-track night ride to a remote agritourism farm for a feast to remember that was one of the stand out highlights of a tour of southern Croatia. Features editor, John Newton, joined Back-Roads Touring on an 8-day/7-night mini coach journey, which also included a glimpse of Montenegro.
In the tiny village of Ljubac – high up in the hinterland about an hour’s drive north of bustling Dubrovnik - the Medica family is reaping the rewards of its local culinary and cultural expertise.

Beer and Chocolates – Must be Flanders!
For a country much smaller than its European neighbours, Belgium (Flanders) is on a par with its big brothers when it comes to culture, history – and political clout. But, as features editor, John Newton, discovered, it's the amber liquid and chocolates that lure hordes of beer guzzlers and sweet-toothed tourists. And, of course, classic Flemish cuisine.

Historic Train Journeys in Yorkshire
Features Editor John Newton returned to his roots in northern England to jump aboard the Settle to Carlisle train, which runs across a stunning viaduct and takes in the unforgettable views of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and neighbouring Cumbria.
It’s recognised as one of the world’s greatest railway trips - like the Glasgow to Mallaig route over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the ‘Harry Potter Bridge’- further north.
All Aboard for John's tour ...

Wales is not just about Rugby and Singing
One thing is for sure: when in North Wales you will not only ‘keep a welcome in the hillsides’ (as the song goes) - but, as Features Editor, John Newton found out, also in every city, town and village. And even at a bustling seaside resort.
Like Llandudno, called the ‘Queen of Welsh Resorts’. That's where I met genial Jon Williams standing by his beloved 1958 Leyland Tiger Cub 41-seat charabanc (early motor coach). For the past 18 years, Jon has been driving his coach - three times a day, six days a week - on what he calls: 'The Great Orme Marine Drive Tour'.

SPIRITED AND COLOURFUL MUST-SEE FESTIVALS IN THE PHILIPPINES
Essential to the Philippine’s vibrant culture, is the colourful mix of local festivals which take place throughout the year.  Lasting anywhere between a day to an entire month and attracting millions of visitors from around the world, these festivals are huge cultural celebrations filled with colour, music and dancing.
Each city in the Philippines has at least one local festival of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint.

To the Top of Europe
Mountains are to be climbed but I have never been drawn to ropes, picks, anchors and spikes. I’m more for sitting back and letting a train or cable car do the hard work for me. That is one reason I love going to Jungfraujoch, The Top of Europe.
The Top of Europe is 3454 meters above sea level in the Swiss Alps above Interlaken. With a majestic backdrop of ice, snow and rock, the exhilaration of being there is palpable yet all you have to do is sit back as three separate trains take you progressively higher and higher.

Morocco with Back-Roads Touring – Part Three
Into the Sahara
So far, this expedition into the previously unvisited Morocco has been so interesting and exciting, but it is about to take on a new dimension! My first visit to the legendary Sahara Desert and staying in a Bedouin Camp! A luxury camp set-up just for us.
Our extremely comfortable coach arrives at Merzouga, a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. It’s known as a gateway to Erg Chebbi, a huge expanse of sand dunes north of town and our band of travellers are very excited.

Morocco - Part Two
Morocco's capital is Rabat, which is on the Bou Regreg River and adjoins the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for architecture that salutes its Islamic and French-colonial heritage.
The tour takes us to the majestic Hassan Tower. . The city's iconic 12th-century minaret, which towers above the ruins of a mosque.  Unmissable, it’s been the symbol of Rabat for eight centuries. It remained unfinished after the death of its founder in 1199, but its solitary splendour overlooking the river amid a wasteland of broken columns is eerily poignant.

Ireland... It’s just like the movies
By Peter Chapman
IT MIGHT seem a little strange, but my decision to do a self-drive tour of Ireland was inspired from watching movies centred on the shamrock isle.
They always revealed beautiful scenery, picturesque boutique hotels and friendly Irish pubs.
As I watched I envisaged myself joining in on a song or two while downing a pint of Guinness at McMurphy’s corner pub.
To be sure ... To be sure - Read on ...

As a very frequent traveller, I always have several special places, yet visited. High on my list was Morocco, so I researched as to a suitable touring company to look for with a great itinerary and a reputation that would be suitable for us mature travellers. The answer was Back-Roads Touring, a well-established company that has won many awards over the last 25 years for its services. Another positive for me was they only take small groups of up to 18 passengers.

It’s a great result which has been consistent for quite some time. “However there is no need to get complacent about this, as there is enormous potential to increase the numbers”, said Sandip Hor, Chairman AITTC while welcoming dignitaries and guests at the ‘Know India Better’ affair held recently in Sydney at Manjit’s at the Wharf.  Adventure World and Taj Hotels and Resorts were partners for this particular event – a  regular initiative of AITTC designed to increase awareness about India as an exciting travel destination.

The splendour and variety of India’s Golden Triangle
Len Rutledge: “I am sitting in front of the Taj Mahal absorbing the magic of the world’s most beautiful building. India’s crowds, chaos and poverty are temporarily relegated to the back of my mind as I let this piece of paradise into my soul”.

India is a country of enormous contrasts where poverty sits beside wealth, beauty intermingles with filth, and structure and chaos compete for supremacy. It will dazzle all your senses and cause you heart-ache at the same time.

Jasper and ‘The Wild One’
The roar from the engine got my adrenaline flowing immediately.
It was my first time on a Harley Davidson and what made it even more pulsating was that I was heading for the dizzy heights of Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, writes John Newton.
Clad in all black leather from virtually head to foot, I certainly looked the part but, unfortunately, it wasn't me with my hand on the throttle. I was all tucked up in the sidecar, while my (easy) rider/guide did all the work.

With the world tumbling headlong into a multinational homogeneity quicker than you can say “would you like fries with that?”, it's refreshing to see Cuba retain a staunch individuality that goes against the tide of global blandness. But for how much longer?

Samuel and Alfred were totally unaware as our zodiac drifted slowly towards them.
Features editor, John Newton looks for Grizzly Bears
They had more important things to do - like catching as many salmon as they could eat.
The two young grizzly bears were splashing around in a creek in the northern wilderness of British Columbia as we inched as close as we dare without them spitting out the salmon and opting for a human confrontation.

Coming Out of My Shell
Hunted and harassed around the world, have these delicate sea creatures found sanctuary here in Samoa? Roderick Eime delves beneath the waves in search of these enigmatic and delightful animals.
The determined reptile bore down with a single-mindedness only coming from eons of pre-programmed behaviour. This ancient sea creature pursued me with just one thing on its mind, and with the scent of food in its nostrils, wasn’t about to let me get away.

City and beach options in Thailand
Well-travelled Len Rutledge reports
Walking the beach, visiting an island, shopping the markets and enjoying a massage are just a few of the attractions that will encourage 35 million people to visit Thailand this year. Many will be returning for the second, third or tenth time because this country has a magical attraction to those who have previously visited. Part of the reason is that it appeals to all ages. I first visited when I was in my twenties. Now, many years later, I still love going there.
