Where is it?
Bowen is situated in the northern section of the Whitsundays and is approximately 90km from Airlie Beach.
Airlie Beach Location - The Whitsundays is located in Australia, on Queenslands central coast, approximately 1120km north of Brisbane and 630km south of Cairns. More specifically, Airlie Beach is situated on the Whitsunday Coast, approximately 149km North of Mackay, 272km South of Townsville.
Famous for: Mango farms, beautiful beaches and snorkeling. Bowen is one of the many charming towns on the Whitsunday Coast, with eight award winning; palm fringed beaches, beautiful bays and a warm tropical climate. Situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays on the shores of Edgecumbe Bay, it is a picturesque seaside town that offers a beachcomber’s paradise.
The Front Beach foreshore in Bowen has recently been redeveloped with fun family activities in mind. With some of the best fringing reefs of the Queensland coast lying just a few metres offshore, the area attracts snorkellers and divers keen to explore the colourful coral gardens.
When heading north from Airlie Beach and Proserpine to Bowen, keep an eye out for the Big Mango, on the Bruce Highway just before you enter the town of Bowen. The Mango marks the Bowen Information Centre, a knowledgeable, friendly place to book all your Bowen accommodation and activities and an excellent source of information if you are planning to continue further north on your journey.
The BIG Mango - The BIG Mango represents the delicious fruit which carries the name sake of the town “Bowen Mango”. The BIG Mango is located at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre, 4 km south of Bowen on the Bruce Highway.
Bowen’s History - All of Bowen’s history can be retraced at the Bowen Historical Museum. From Catalina Flying Boats, to the unbelievable story of James Morrill and his courageous story of survival.
Murals - The 25 historical murals, which are proudly displayed throughout Bowen’s streets, depict the diverse history from the town’s early settlement to present day. Tourism Bowen also hosts a guided walking tour featuring the Bowen murals every Wednesday morning beginning at 9AM next to the Bowen Library and Council Chambers (Between May & September).
Summergarden Theatre - The Summergarden Theatre today is the major provider of screen and stage entertainment for the Bowen, Whitsunday, Proserpine and Collinsville districts
Snorkelling / Diving - Bowen has some of the best fringing coral literally metres off the beaches and bays and islands.
Back to Nature - Nestled where “the Bush meets the Beach; Bowen has a number of natural attractions that must be on any visitors itinerary. From the relaxed bushwalks to the spectacular lookouts, these are sights you cannot miss.
Golf - Bowen has a 9 hole beachfront golf links on Queens Bay and visitors are welcome. The clubhouse is equipped with a specialty store, bar and restaurant.
Muller’s Lagoon - One of Bowen’s most beautiful spots is Muller’s Lagoon. Mullers Lagoon is 23.57 hectares of picturesque parkland in the centre of town, which has been turned into a superb botanical gardens and wetlands habitat. Muller’s Lagoon is a hot spot for birdwatchers with 176 species of bird life inhabiting the area.
On the Water - If you want to get out on the water around Bowen, there are a number of ways. You can go sailing, fishing or cruising – the choice is entirely yours. And while you’re out there, check out some of the beautiful islands.
Activities: There is plenty to see and do in Bowen; viewing the magnificent murals displaying Bowen’s history, enjoying one of the many bush walks around the bays, wander up Flagstaff Hill to take in the views, stroll along beautiful sandy beaches, go snorkelling, diving, fishing, windsurfing or sailing on our brilliant blue waters, or just relax and soak in the beautiful northern sunshine.
